folc.ca's comment on HAZCO's answer to FAQ #3

Note: The background text in the following was copied from the Frequently-asked Questions page at HAZCO's website, Nov. 2, 2005.  HAZCO's answers to "frequently asked questions" deserve further comments.  Those comments are inserted where required in HAZCO's text and are shown on yellow background.

From HAZCO's FAQ web page (quoted verbatim):

FAQ #3. Where will it [the sulphur storage site] be located and how much land will be required?

The proposed site will be located near the centre of section 35, Township 55, Range 20, W4M (2.2 km east of Bruderheim, Alberta, just north of Highway 15).    The facility footprint will be approximately 79 acres (32 ha.), not including the rail track.

Comment:

The proposed HAZCO sulphur storage and handling site would be located 3.2 km east from the intersection of Highway 45 and Range Road 204 (the location of the Bruderheim School) and 2.2 km from the eastern outskirts of Bruderheim. (See map of homes, farms and businesses located near proposed sulphur storage project; MS-Word doc - 39kB, and satellite maps for Bruderheim (82kB JPG file) and Lamont (11kB JPG file) areas.)

As to the "facility footprint", from the information available at the HAZCO information office as of Nov 4th, 2005 it is impossible to determine what the truth is as to how large the "facility footprint" would be.  The official at HAZCO's information office stressed that one should not forget that HAZCO's current application "is only the first step" and that "before you know it," and pointing at several locations on the site map, while saying "here, here, ...and here," concluded, "there will be ten facilities like the first one."

Ten times the number of facilities like the first one give rise to ten times the importance of the concerns we must worry about.

Several maps were on display at the HAZCO information office.  All of them showed different-sized "facility footprints", including drawings of sulphur block storage areas in some instances. (See information on environmental impact of sulphur blocks.)

As HAZCO bought a whole section of land for its sulphur site, it stands to reason that the "facility footprint" can be as large as 640 acres.
